The vacuum pump, simply, is a pump that removes gas molecules from a sealed volume or space in order to leave behind a vacuum. A vacuum is, of course, a volume of space that is entirely lacking in any type of matter. The gas pressure in such an atmosphere is significantly less than the actual atmospheric pressure. There are generally three different techniques that a vacuum pump will utilize. The first is known as positive displacement. This type of pump uses a mechanism to repeatedly expand a volume or cavity. The only issue with this technique is the use of high end backstreams from the displacement. This can cause a limit in their general usefulness because of the reversal in airflow; it inhibits the general airflow, hence its usefulness in low vacuums. It is somewhat useful in a home vacuum system because they do not generally require much airflow for the tasks they perform.
